Past Paper for New Media Technology. Jan 05

1.
a) List three traditional functions of TV which, the passage suggests, web activities now full fill.
-news
-weather
-sports

b) What evidence is there in the passage to suggest that the web offers new ways of interaction previously unavailable from TV?
-buying/shopping on sites such as Ebay
-communicating with friends on sites such as friends reunited
-dating online on sites like udate and yahoo personals.

c) What is meant in the passage by: 'the final cost barriers to spending hours connected to the web are also removed'?
-It is not pay as you go anymore you just pay one flat rate per month on broadband.

2.
a) Why does the passage suggest that people will have difficulty saying whether they spend more time watching television or surfing the internet?
-It will be difficult to say whether you would spend more time watching television or surfing the internet because they are becoming converged. Eventually they will become one thing on which you can do both.

b) The move away from TV towards the web has been particularly apparent with the younger generation. Discuss ways in which young people may be using new media technologies  rather than watching TV.
- In todays society the younger generation have a lot more options in substitute to television as well as convergence with the television; for instance your now able to watch complete programs on the web with applications like 4Od where the user is able to watch prevision shows from channel 4; the web also plays another factor in luring away the younger generation from tele and this is the increased interactivity seen in things such as facebook where your now able to chat to all your friends and share photos and more very similar to myspace.
Other new media technologies such as the ipod attract more than television having a wide array of convergence consisting of videos, music, photos and games giving users the ability to personalize what they do rather than tuning not a sceduled television channel.
The most popular new media technology among the young generation is the games console, typically a lot of time gets spent on these consoles but with the development of interactivity including internet connection and multiplayer action there is a lot more to do leaving no time for these gamers to want to sit down and watch tv when they could be actively be playing the nintendo wii which involves physical work.
In conclusion the newly developed new media technologies such as the ipod, world wide web and games consoles seem a lot more attractive and interactible with friends then television does moreover television has become less vital due to the wider accessability to view programs elsewhere.
